Vanguard Airlines 737-230 N122NJ - Midway December 11, 1999
Vanguard Airlines was set up in 1994 and began its services on December 2 of this year from its main hub at Kansas City. The airlines saw the best growth and performance in the summer of 2001, but the September 11 attacks changed all that. The industry downturn following the tragedy forced Vanguard Airlines into bankruptcy and it ceased operations on July 29, 2002 and liquidated.
The airline flew Boeing 737s and MD-80s.
Independence Air CRJ-200 N643BR - Atlanta March 25, 2005
Independence Air was established as Atlantic Coast Airlines on December 15, 1989, operating feeder services for United Airlines and Delta Air Lines. After United withdrew the contract, Atlantic Coast Airlines reinvented itself as low-cost carrier, Independence Air. Its service began on June 16, 2004, but it filed Chapter 11 Bankruptcy on November 7, 2005 and ceased all operations on January 5, 2006.
The airline flew CRJ and Airbus A319.
National Airlines 757-236 N506NA - Midway October 15, 2000
National Airline was established as the low fare airline at Las Vegasf McCarran International Airport and started a revenue service on May 27, 1999, becoming the third airline in the U.S. to use the National Airlines name. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on December 6, 2000 under rising fuel cost and an economic recession and the financial trouble after 9/11 forced the company to cease all operations on November 6, 2002.
ATA Airlines 737-83N N315TZ - Dallas-Fort Worth March 22, 2005
ATA Airlines, formerly known as American Trans Air, filed the bankruptcy and ceased all operations on April 2, 2008. The loss of a major contract for its military charter operations and a recent price increase for jet fuel are the major reason for this action.
Champion Air 727-212 N293AS - Dallas-Fort Worth March 22, 2005
Champion Air, a Bloomington-based charter carrier saddled with an aging and inefficient fleet of Boeing 727s, announced on March 31, 2008 that it will go out of business May 31.
MLT Vacations, a subsidiary of Northwest Airlines, contracted with Champion for many of its charter flights to leisure destinations, is phasing out its business with Champion this year. MLT and the NBA provided the vast majority of Champion's revenue.
Champion got its start in 1993 as MGM Grand Air, offering air service to high-end customers, including corporate executives and actors. Dick Page, of Edina, acquired the operating certificate from MGM Grand Air and founded Champion.
